The Structure of the Virtual Classroom:

The Virtual classroom must include three key parts to be a fully functioning educational environment:
•    Virtual Classroom for Synchronous* teaching
•    Virtual Classroom for Asynchronous* teaching
•    Virtual Classroom for Administrative duties

The Virtual Classroom for Synchronous teaching comes in the form of a “live” space where teachers and student meet. Lectures, critiques and discussions happen there.The Virtual Classroom for Asynchronous teaching must be a separate online entity, usually a website. This space offers registration for students, it must be secured to protect access to content, and allow download of class handouts etc.

The Virtual Classroom for administrative duties is usually identical as the one for Asynchronous teaching, but allows the teacher to enter, attendees, student’s attendance, notes and grades.

The Virtual Classroom relies on its administrator who manages these three separate parts. The administrator is a key part in managing a successful Virtual Classroom. His responsibilities are multiple and critical.
•    Schedule all classes in Virtual Classroom
•    Train teachers on how to hold a class online
•    Understand all functions of Virtual Classroom
•    Manage Static part of Classroom (Website) for asynchronous teaching.
•    Create registration for students to access secure part of site
•    Upload class content (handouts) for downloads

The physical location of where the class is controlled and takes place is dictated by the schools, as teachers can be located anywhere, providing they have access to a fast Internet connection (DSL, Cable, T1.). The schools decide what would be best, but it would be highly recommended to have an onsite location such as a small office initially, as the program is developed. This will allow the in-house administrator and all parties involved a central location for all training etc.
