The Delivery of E-learning:

deliveryThere are two main ways to deliver educational content online.
•    Synchronous
•    Asynchronous

Synchronous teaching refers to a group of people learning the same things at the same time. This is the type of pedagogy practiced in most schools and undergraduate programs. A lecture is an example of synchronous learning in a face-to-face environment and with the advent of web conferencing tools, people can learn at the same time in different places as well.

Asynchronous teaching refers to a student-centered teaching method that uses online learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time and place among a network of people.

A balanced Virtual Classroom will offer both Synchronous and Asynchronous teaching. Synchronous teaching would be when Instructors can answer questions and interact with learners through the telephone or chat media, and the program is highly instructional.  During these events Lectures, critiques, review discussions are delivered live by a teacher to a group of students.  Asynchronous teaching would be when the students access the classroom and can work, study, take a test on their own through the use of forms or downloadable documents available in the classroom.
